Village of Pigeon Hiring Full-Time DPW Laborer

Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the DPW Superintendent, this position performs general labor in support of a wide range of public works projects to maintain and upgrade village infrastructure. Work includes road and utility system maintenance, groundskeeping, facility upkeep, snow and ice removal, landscaping, and related tasks.
Essential Job Functions
An employee in this position may be required to:
Adhere to all applicable safety procedures while operating equipment, working with chemicals, or entering confined spaces.
Maintain daily logs/timesheets of projects, vehicles, and equipment.
Assist with routine maintenance and basic repair of Village equipment and vehicles, recording preventative maintenance activities.
Provide manual labor for the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, alleys, parking lots, signs, streetlights, and related infrastructure.
Support utility system maintenance, including installation, repair, flushing, and upkeep of water mains, sewer lines, fire hydrants, and water meters.
Perform meter reading and shutoff tasks.
Carry out custodial and maintenance work for Village buildings and facilities.
Assist with groundskeeping projects such as mowing, trimming, planting, leaf and brush pickup, tree removal, and storm cleanup.
Operate vehicles and equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, and lifts under supervision.
Maintain effective relationships with the public and other employees, responding to inquiries professionally.
Assist with community events and seasonal projects such as parades, holiday decorations, and park preparation.
Respond to emergencies and be available on standby, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Perform other special projects as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
One or more years of work experience in general labor, construction, or related field.
Must be drug and alcohol free while on the job; subject to random testing.
Valid Michigan driver’s license required.
CDL license required (new hires must obtain within six months of hire).
Must obtain required EGLE (S3 and L2) licenses as soon as eligibility allows.
Knowledge of safety procedures in equipment operation, maintenance work, and confined space entry.
Knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment used in infrastructure repair and maintenance.
Skill in operating public works vehicles, tools, and equipment.
Ability to complete a variety of construction, repair, and maintenance tasks.
Strong communication skills and ability to follow directions.
Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment.
Ability to work efficiently under stress, changing priorities, and in emergency situations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Employees in this position work primarily outdoors at public works sites, sometimes under hazardous conditions such as uneven terrain, confined spaces, dust, chemicals, heavy machinery, and inclement weather. Physical requirements include frequent lifting (up to 75 pounds to waist level and 25 pounds overhead), pulling, pushing, climbing, and crawling. Noise levels can vary from quiet to very loud depending on work activities.
